John W. Roberts, M.B.A, CPA, CGMA - Principal

Mr. Roberts is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in the State of Hawaii as well as a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA).

Education:  Mr. Roberts received a Master in Business Administration degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. He also graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, magna cum laude, from the University of Washington in Seattle, and was elected Phi Beta Kappa.  While at the University of Washington, he rowed on the frosh and varsity crew teams and was a Big W winner.

Serving Clients:  Before joining Niwao & Roberts in 1992, Mr. Roberts worked for Deloitte, Haskins, & Sells (now known as Deloitte), CPAs, in Honolulu; Peat, Marwick Mitchell & Company (now known as KPMG), CPAs, in Anchorage, Alaska; and the United States Government on many overseas assignments in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.  Mr. Roberts speaks several foreign languages.

Drawing on his varied and extensive work experience and his strong business management training, Mr. Roberts performs management consulting and international transfer pricing studies. He has also performed audits of various organizations.

Serving the Profession - National:  Mr. Roberts currently serves on the Enforcement Resources Committee of the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA).

Serving the Profession - State of Hawaii:  Mr. Roberts serves on the State of Hawaii Board of Public Accountancy where he is chair of the Continuing Professional Education Committee.  He served as State President of the Hawaii Association of Pujblic Accountants from 2009 to 2014, and received several outstanding member awards from that organization.  More recently, he received the United States Small Business Administration 2014 Financial Services Champion of the Year award for the County of Maui.

Serving the State of Hawaii:  Mr. Roberts previously served as a member of the State of Hawaii Tax Review Commission from 2005 to 2007.  The State Tax Review Commission conducts a systematic review of Hawaii's tax structure every five years, using standards such as equity and efficiency.

Serving the Community:  Mr. Roberts is a past president of the AOAO of the Wells Street Professional Center and is a member and former treasurer of the Rotary Club of Wailuku.  He is a past president of the Maui Chapter of the American Heart Association.

Professional Memberships:  Mr. Roberts is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the National Society of Accountants, the Hawaii Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the Hawaii Association of Public Accountants. 

Other:  Mr. Roberts is the author of several periodical articles on accounting, tax, and management topics.  He also speaks on corporate governance and emergency preparedness issues.
